The Wellington was the mainstay of the British Bomber Command's night offensive from 1939 to 1943, when it was phased out. It was active in the first operation against German naval units on Sept. 4, 1939 and formed over half of the force on the first 1000 bomber raid on Cologne, May 30, 1942. Over 11, 000 Wellingtons of all marks were made.
